Song Review – Guilty

Guilty is a song by Marina and the diamonds in her debut album The Family Jewels. It is a song about a dream that Marina had, in which Marina was trusted to watch a rich persons dog, but every time she picked a dog up, its legs would break. She could either own up and suffer the consequences, or leave the dog to die locked in a cupboard. As shown by the lyrics “killed a dog so small and rare” she chose to kill the dog. This song was all about feeling guilty and regretting her decision.

I really like this song because of the way it sounds and how dark the lyrics are. This song is very nice sounding and I really like it. I give it 🌟🌟🌟 out of five

Song Review – Mowgli’s Road

This is purely my opinion (Just to let you know). This song is part of Marina’s first album The Family Jewels. I really like this song because of it’s unique lyrics and extremely weird music video (like wtf?). So lets get started. The whole concept of this song is about Marina not knowing who she wants to be or what she wants to do in life, which directly contrasts her other song Oh No! (See the review for more details). In the song she is being guided by “the spoons” to go down a safe and unforesaken road as shown by the lyrics “Oh lord, I have been told, that I must take the unforesaken road” and “The cutlery will keep on chasing me” and “To lead you down the unforesaken road”. She is battling with herself to decide which way her life will go as seen by the lyrics “There’s a fork in the road….. and I don’t know who I want to be”. Her superiors and friends are trying to persuade her to go down the safe route and she nearly agrees “I’ll do as I am told”. However, we see in Oh No that she ends up choosing her dreams over a stable career.

Aside from the lyrics, this song is really special and one of a kind. It’s strange cuckoo lyrics and the voice of the spoons make this song sound different to Marina’s others. Overall, I really enjoy this song and never skip it when it comes on. I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟 out of five.

Song Review – Oh No!

Okay, so to start off, I am probably biased of this song because it was the first marina song I ever heard. So on with the review. The song Oh No was part of Marina’s first album, the Family Jewels. It’s a very pop styled song and definitely sounds like a pop song but the lyrics are more interesting. This song is about being very career driven and only having one emotion. This song could be said to be a sequel or parallel Marina to her other song Mowgli’s Road, also part of The Family Jewels. In that song, Marina says “And I don’t know, don’t know, don’t know, don’t know who I want to be” and yet in Oh No she says “I know exactly what I want and who I want to be”. This song also tackles the issue of the effect TV can have on your life. When she says “TV taught me how to feel, now real life has no appeal” she is showing this.

Aside from the lyrics, this song has great melodies and hooks. My favourite part of the song is the ‘La la la’ part that plays during the chorus’ second round and the ending. Overall I feel Oh No is one of my favourite songs by Marina, not just because of it’s great sound but also because of it’s deep and genius lyrics. I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟 out of five
